Fostering Innovation through Hands-On Experiment Activities
In an effort to promote STEM education and cultivate a culture of scientific curiosity, KLESF organized a highly successful Science Fair on 27-29 October 2023 at MIECC, Seri Kembangan. The event aimed to engage students in interactive and experiential learning through a series of experiment activities.
KLESF was conceptualized to provide students with a hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The event sought to enhance their understanding of STEM concepts and foster a love for these disciplines through engaging experiment activities.
The primary goal was to expose students to the practical application of STEM concepts. Objectives included promoting critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. A range of experiment activities was carefully selected to cater to different grade levels, ensuring relevance to the curriculum and age-appropriateness.
Adequate resources, including materials for experiments, venue arrangements, and volunteer support, were allocated based on the number of participating students and activities planned.
See Your DNA activities were conducted and allowed students to learn how to extract DNA from banana and biscuits using household items. They learn about DNA and the concept of DNA Isolation.
The day was organized into structured time slots, ensuring that each grade level had the opportunity to participate in all experiment activities. Parent and teacher volunteers played a crucial role in facilitating the experiment stations. They provided guidance, assistance, and supervision, creating a supportive learning environment.
Students were actively encouraged to ask questions, make predictions, and draw conclusions during each experiment. This interactive approach enhanced their overall learning experience. The students displayed heightened enthusiasm and curiosity throughout the day, actively participating in discussions and eagerly experimenting at each station.
Post-event surveys revealed overwhelmingly positive feedback from both students and volunteers. Many expressed a newfound interest in STEM subjects and a desire for more hands-on learning opportunities. It was a resounding success, achieving its objectives of providing students with engaging experiment activities and fostering a deeper appreciation for STEM subjects. The event not only enriched the curriculum but also inspired a sense of wonder and curiosity among students, laying the foundation for future explorations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
